This would make heads explode.

Over the course of the last week or so there have been major rumblings and conjecture about the VGAs for one reason, and it’s got nothing to do with any actual awards. The hype train has been at full speed thanks to a billboard announcing that there will be a “PS3 exclusive you won’t believe”; followed by the gushings of Geoff Keighley. Well we’ve seen this countless times before from just about all corners and in most cases it’s always led to a disappointment no-one could believe. Regardless 8BitBot decided to take a look at the potential options as well as what’s being said out there by the gamers.

First we have to look at some of the wording: “PS3 exclusive you won’t believe”.

Well right away that tells us that it cannot come from an existing, active PS3 exclusive franchise. Some have said MGS5, GoW4, Uncharted4 and others but quite frankly another game from those franchises is pretty much the opposite of “won’t believe”. How could anyone NOT believe another game from those is coming?

One potential option is a new IP altogether, most people’s favourite is the cryptically announced “The Last of Us” which had a couple of teaser videos go up at the official site www.lastofus.com which shows a video of quarantine depression and some ants getting mind controlled by a fungus. Sounds interesting but how exactly can a new IP be unbelievable? The only way that could happen is if the IP was pretty darn stupid like “My little pony goes to Zombieland”. New IPs happen and they are always treated with scepticism until proven, this just doesn’t fit with what the hype train that’s speeding up.

Having said that the excitement levels have been very high regarding the Super Smash Bros Brawl clone that Sony looks likely to be creating, this one would get a lot of attention. However Keighley announced only yesterday that he can’t believe there hasn’t been any leaks about it yet, which pretty much rules out the SSBB game. The only other new IP game that could possibly make enough waves would be a first PS3 game made by Bungie.

Next up is one of my favourite options which would be a rebirth or reawakening of an old franchise, Sony has a ton of these lying around and these days it hard to tell who owns what anymore. What the franchise is could be anyone’s guess. Crash Bandicoot, G-Police, Kingdom Hearts; who knows but it’s certainly an avenue that Sony could easily pull off and it sounds rather plausible.

Then we have the remake brigade, it’s crazy how many people want a FF7 remake, the only thing crazier is the fact that it hasn’t been done yet. This could fit in a sense but I’m not sure it’s unbelievable, everyone wants it already so we’re going to exclude this as the answer.

For us the use of the phrase “you won’t believe” leads us to think that it’s either a stolen\bought IP or something that was multi-plat before and is now going exclusive. The biggest game we can think of right now would be GTA5, that would fit the hype, that would be massive, but it also makes no business sense whatsoever. GTA4 sold immensely well on the 360. But then I guess we are looking for something crazy here. Another option would be a new Gears of War game that’s going to be multi-plat; this is a possible scenario but we can’t believe there would be anything ready to show so soon after Gears3 just came out, but I guess not believing is the point. Don’t discount RE6 as a real option either.

Personally I feel there are only two options, and in order of probability they are:

The normal build up to a major disappointment we have see so much of in this industry. VGAs need viewers and what better what to do it than exclusivity hype? This announcement has gotten both PS3 and Xbox fanboys in quite a state (not that it needed much). PS3 fans want something to shove into Xbots faces and the 360 fans are waiting for the meltdown of a stupid announcement to laugh at the PS3 clan.

Next up is the one I have my money on: HalfLife 3. Yes that’s right. That’s the kind of game that would be unbelievable. Consider how long the fan base has been waiting for it, consider how Gabe has done a complete turnaround regarding Sony; from the Orange Box debacle to the Portal 2 love, consider the fact that we’ve seen the devs wearing HL3 shirts recently, consider Gabe’s ranting about XBL and it points to a tiny sliver of a possibility.

So that’s our take, luckily we won’t have to wait long at all for the answer.
